An outstanding guitarist, flutist and composer, Caspar Joseph Mertz was born into a poor family. Mertz’s income came from his guitar and flute performances. Mertz made an important contribution to the new guitar style. Mertz played on an 8-string Staufer and then on a 10-string Scheltzer. Mertz won a prestigious price for guitar construction in Brussels.
